University of Hartford Courses

Full-time employees may take up to four courses (12 credits) a year tuition-free at the University of Hartford. They must be taken in different semesters and cannot include PhD courses. Employees should not take more than one course per semester during Watkinson’s regular academic year. Do not schedule courses that meet on Tuesdays during the school year, as these conflict directly with Watkinson's weekly faculty meetings.

  • Full Time Education Specialist

    Watkinson School, offering inventive teaching to Hartford and surrounding communities since 1881, seeks a Learning Skills Program Education Specialist. Successful candidates will be responsible for working individually with students and in small groups focusing on math tutoring, reading comprehension support, organization/study strategies, and written expression, as well as being a resource to their students’ teachers in terms of best ways to work with students to achieve mastery of coursework. Additionally, applicants should expect to work interactively with academic teachers, parents, and students in the program. Strong teaching, communication, and writing skills are important.     Watkinson School, offering inventive teaching to Hartford and surrounding communities since 1881, seeks a summer-only full-time elementary school teacher. SPHERE is a non-profit, five-week program for 80 Hartford youth entering grades 1-5 held at Watkinson School.

    Classes are aligned with the Common Core State Standards which includes teaching literacy, math, science, reading, and technology. Successful applicants will demonstrate creative approaches to instruction and a commitment to reaching all students. Applicants must possess enthusiasm for working in a dynamic environment, teaching heterogeneously grouped classes and developing and sustaining positive relationships with parents, students, colleagues and other summer program staff.

    A bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and proven successful experience teaching at this level is required. In addition to classroom teaching responsibilities, this position includes supervising high school student counselors assisting in the classroom and occasionally moderating an afternoon activity.
