Middle School Offerings

  • Chorus

    Students who love to sing should join the Middle School Chorus. This half-block course offers students a chance to sing in a large ensemble, learning singing skills, collaboration, and performance techniques. The Chorus sings a wide range of music, with the focus on blending and harmony. Some recitals offer students the chance to perform in smaller groups of their choosing. Students can also choose their own music for these performances, while working on choral music for several other concerts and recitals throughout the year.
  • Ensemble

    This ensemble is also a half-block course in the school day for students who play orchestra or band instruments, and can read music. The ensemble plays a wide range of music, and there are opportunities for students to work in small groups for some of the recitals throughout the year.
  • Jazz Band

    This small jazz group will meet once each week to work on Jazz arrangements and improvisation. Students who have music-reading experience and like experimenting with their musical instrument are encouraged to try out for this great, fun band. MS Jazz Band performs several times a year in concerts and recitals, as well as working on original songs and arrangements during their weekly rehearsals.
  • 6th Grade Music

    One trimester – Survey & Performance class; open to all students. Every student learns about the history of music, from Bach to Rock, while working in small groups on original song lyrics, percussion instruments, keyboard playing and singing. This class is hands-on music-making fun!
  • Private Music Instruction

    Private music lessons are available to a limited number of students on the following instruments: Guitar; Bass; Piano. Theory and technique are the focus of these lessons, along with repertoire & improvisation. Lessons are given once a week and are scheduled around the student’s academic schedule.
  • Afternoon Ensembles

    New this year, Watkinson offers some students the chance to make their own music with their friends in middle and upper school. Once each week, these ensembles will meet to work on music chosen and run by the students. A Cappella Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Garage Ensemble are currently available. Any student who is interested must contact Mr. Nelson to set up a simple audition.

Upper School Offerings

  • Chorus

    Chorus is a half-block course, offered during the school day to any Upper School student interested in singing. Reading music, voice training, sight singing and ear training will be part of the curriculum, along with working on songs for various school events, including concerts. All arrangements are written specifically for The Upper School Chorus, from Madrigals to Jazz.
  • Ensemble

    Watkinson’s Upper School Ensemble is also a half-block class that meets during the school day, to play original arrangements written just for them, and work on many skills for performing in various school and community events, including concerts. Students who play an instrument and read music are encouraged to try out!
  • The Hot Club of Watkinson

    Watkinson's Upper School chamber ensemble plays traditional jazz songs and Gypsy Jazz. This acoustic, string-based band performs in concerts and at several events throughout the school year. Students who read music, enjoy improvising, and love playing jazz are encouraged to audition for this music group.
  • Advanced Music Studies

    This select class will focus on music theory and composition in preparation for continuing music studies in college. Recording projects and performance opportunities are included, along with concert performances of original compositions and arrangements.
  • History of American Music

    This one-trimester elective in the History department covers the history of American music from the arrival of European music to the birth of Rock ‘n Roll. Students will learn about the development of America’s unique music, including Blues, Gospel, Jazz, Country and Folk music through historic music performance videos, select books and many recordings.

  • Four Middle Schoolers Participate in NRMS Music Festival

    Watkinson School is proud to announce Charles S. '21, William E. '22, Ayana P-M. '22, and Jade S. '21 auditioned for and were selected to sing in this year’s Northern Region Middle School Music Festival Mixed Choir.
  • Brass Kickers Play Awards Assembly

    The Watkinson Brass Kickers perform at the close of this year's Upper School Awards Assembly. Congratulations to the Brass Kickers for a great first year!

Meet the Music Director

  • Watkinson's New Music Director: Bram Wayman

    Bram joins us after successfully completing an apprenticeship with Kent Tritle in New York City where he served as a guest conductor with the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble. He did his undergraduate work in music at Yale University before earning two master's degrees in composition and conducting from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, respectively.
